Irvin Guiles: The marriage license is the document that allows you to be legally married. You must give this to the official who performs the marriage ceremony. Then that person signs and returns a form to the office that issued the license and certifies that the marriage was performed on a certain day. That is registered in the state and is official proof that you are married. You can obtain a copy of that certificate as proof of the marriage.
