should I repair my car before trading it in?

Renita Sefton: Check bluebook on your car. If you think will get at least twice the cost of repair on a trade in then go for it.For instance, my car would be worth about 4 grand on a tradein and I know from unfortunate experience that it costs 500 bucks to replace the bumper, so if my bumper got winged before a trade in, I'd fix it....Show more

Frank Gazaway: If you have the tools and skills to fix things cheap yourself, it can be worth doing. If you're paying a shop retail rates for the labor and parts, you're probably going to be worse off. Don't do it in that case. Try to sell private party first.

Arnoldo Budzynski: Car dealers tend to value a car on the way it looks as opposed to the way it works. I once tried to sell a Ford to a dealer; the engine was mechanically sound having had a lot of work done, but the bumper was cracked and there was rust on the wheel arch, so he wasn't interested.Saying that, you could shop around - some dealers may not be too ! concerned and be able to repair the cosmetic damage themselves....Show more
